People tend to underestimate the value of their data. They post their lives online and use free platforms without thinking much about what happens to all the user data these companies are collecting. Take WhatsApp, for example, a super robust platform that lets people message and call each other for free. Why would something that good be free?
It’s free because Meta, the company behind it, makes its money by maximizing the value of your data. You’d think people would be more skeptical of a company whose entire business model depends on tracking and profiting from their users’ digital behavior, but most people don’t really care.
I’ve heard all kinds of reasoning for that. One of the most common is: “What are they gonna do with my data? Who cares?”
Fair. Freedom is a beautiful thing, and you’re free to do what you want, with your life and with your data! That said, the talk below brings up some interesting reflections on the real value of your data. Check it out and let us know what you think.
Spoiler alert: your actions in the digital world (aka your data) carry more weight and implications than you might’ve ever imagined.
